Time Travelers!

Friday, March 29, 2019

We are now official time travelers!  We have travelled forwards and backwards in time by 8hrs!  Pretty cool, right?!

12 am Friday morning found us at Dubai airport.  With a 2hr layover after arriving before midnight, we couldn’t board our next flight until 1:45am.  During our down time we bought drinks and snacks to tide us over.  Felt good for some people to have ice cream and Starbucks coffee again. We used their free WiFi to check messages, Facebook, email and whatever else.  Some of us were doing crosswords and word finds as well. We sang Happy Birthday to Dr. Donna at the stroke of midnight!  Happy birthday Donna!  We are so glad we got to spend the last couple weeks with you!

Dubai to JFK was a very long flight: 14 hours to be exact.  We watched movies and the external plane cameras to help pass time.  Many of us got as much sleep as we could.  The flight crew were very nice and attentive to our needs even serving us 3 meals, which were quite good!  There was much more turbulence this time in coming back.  Our plane was steadily flying at about 40,000ft the whole trip!  Talk about being “on top of the world!”

We arrived safely at JFK after 9am.  We only had an hour in layover to transfer to the last plane.  With the size of JFK and the number of people being processed we ended up missing our flight.  Thankfully JetBlue got us on the next flight free of charge.  This gave us time to get through customs, find our terminal and get some food/drinks.  There’s nothing like a good Jamba Juice!  Yum!

We were relieved to finally arrive in Buffalo after almost 30hrs of traveling including the layovers.  30hrs feels like forever when you’re stuck on a plane or at the airport.  Our Ohio crew still had a long drive ahead of them, so we wished them well and said our goodbyes.  It was a relief when we arrived back at the church and were welcomed home by our church friends.  It felt bittersweet to be home again.

We loved our time in Uganda and many of us would like to go back again!  It was such a blessing to be of service to God’s people in need and to be loved on by them to show their appreciation.  There are many memories we can share and hold dear in our hearts.  Experiencing their culture was fun!  Even in the midst of their poverty and hardships they were joyful and kind.  God, hope, and community keep them strong and there is much we can learn from that.  The experience was worth it!
